A network engineer, also known as a senior systems administrator, network analyst, WAN administrator, infrastructure engineer, network architect and network designer, is an IT professional who designs and manages an organisation’s LAN and WAN networks.
They are responsible for the engineering, configuration, installation and administration of LAN networks, including network switches and routers and network security – firewalls, anti-virus software etc. This includes choosing or assisting in the selection of hardware and software to meet an organisation’s IT needs; working with third party providers; as well as managing the rolling out of new equipment and systems, and ensuring that corrective and preventative measures are performed on existing equipment and systems.
Some qualifications required for Network Engineer jobs:
- Cisco Qualified: CCNA | CCNP | CCDA | CCDP | CCSP | CCIE
- University degree in computer science or releated field
- Extensive knowledge of Linux
- Extensive knowledge of Window's Servers
- MCSE
- familiarity with EIA/TIA and IEEE specifications for LAN technology
- TCP/IP, Ethernet and OSI Model
